Frequently Asked Questions

How are soothers cleaned?

Before first use, and at regular intervals thereafter, boil the soother in water for up to five minutes, or use a sterilizer. Please avoid leaving the pacifier in the sterilizing solution for longer than the time recommended. Sometimes water may enter the inside of the teat, this is because of a ventilation systems that exists in the nipple and helps make the soother orthodontically correct. When the baby closes down on the teat, the air from inside the teat is pushed out through the ventilation system thereby flattening the teat and adapting to the baby´s individual oral cavity. So, the ventilation hole is needed in order to allow for proper development of your baby's jaw and mouth.

How often should the soother be replaced?

Check the soother before each use - especially when baby is teething - and throw away at the first signs of damage or weakness. However, we recommend the soother be replaced every two months for hygenic purposes.

Can babies swallow the pacifier?

No. All MAM soothers are developed in cooperation with medical experts and comply with international safety standards and minimal size regulations for soothers. It is impossible for babies to swallow them. In rare cases, babies can manage to squeeze the entire pacifier in their mouths. Should the soother become lodged in baby's mouth, remove the soother as gently as possible by grabbing the soother knob. It is designed to be easily and safely removed.

What difference is there between latex and silicone teats?

Latex is a soft, resilient, natural rubber. It is eco-friendly and much more flexible than silicone. However, after prolonged use, the material can change. If latex is stored in a hot area of your home, or is in contact with sunlight for an extended period of time, it's shape can change and is then stripped from its orthodontic qualities. Furthermore, because it is a natural material, the latex can become sticky and begin to look unhygenic. There is no clear scientific evidence for a connection between latex teats and latex allergy. If you are a parent who wishes to avoid using latex, you can simply do so by using a soother with a silicone teat.
Silicone is an intensively tested, well-tolerated plastic that does not age. It complies with all the applicable requirements of FDA and EN 1400, however, is not as bite resistant and a little less elastic than latex. Consequently, we recommend you thoroughly inspect a soother before each time baby uses it, especially if baby is teething and uses a silicone soother.

What difference is there between standard silicone and MAM Ultra Soft Silicone®?

MAM has developed an innovative silicone teat: the Ultra Soft Silicone® teat. The patented silicone teat is silicone with a difference as it is silky soft and feels most like mom's breast. Thanks to the anti-slip surface, the soother easily stays in baby's mouth.

Is the shape of the soother and teat important?

Yes, only orthodontic soothers support baby’s healthy jaw and teeth development. MAM collaborates with medical experts appointed by the ICMRS (International Childrens Medical Research Society) to help develop and design innovative, orthodontically safe soothers that suit baby's various developmental stages. All MAM pacifiers have symmetrical teats: there is no ‘top’ or ‘bottom’. So, the soother can be put in baby's mouth in any direction and will not cause any harm to their oral cavity development.
MAM soothers are also orthodontically safe for your baby primarily because of a ventilation system that exists in the teat. When the baby closes down on the teat, the air from inside the nipple is pushed out through the ventilation system thereby flattening the nipple and adapting to the baby´s individual oral cavity.

Should I allow my child to use a soother?

Babies are born with the natural urge to suck. Orthodontic soothers, if no longer used by the child’s third birthday, support healthy development. When the child wants to sleep, needs comforting or wants to relax, he or she will be happy about having a soother. You can choose refrain soother usage when the baby is playing as the baby is already distracted, and most likely, relaxed by interaction of toys. Many pediatric dentists and other medical experts do recommend the use of soothers because it is much easier to wean a baby off of soothers than it is to wean off of thumbsucking.

How often and for how long are children allowed to suck a soother daily?

All children are different and have their individual needs. Sucking calms and relaxes babies and should therefore not be limited. The orthodontic MAM soothers support healthy development so you do not need to worry about them harming your baby's oral cavity development.

Do MAM soothers contain softening agents?

No. MAM products do not contain softening agents. MAM only uses materials that meet highest expectations and safety standards of the FDA and EN 1400. Hence, all MAM soothers are completely Baby Safe. They do not contain BPA, PVC, Phthalate, and Lead.

How to wean children off the soother:

  • Limit where the soother is used: baby is only allowed the soother in bed
  • Symbolically give the soother away: the child will be happy about an agreed something in return
  • Stories and fairy tales about stopping soother use support parents
  • Strengthen the child’s self-confidence: big girls and boys don’t need soothers!

What are nitrosamines and how does MAM check their intensity?

Nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances are chemicals that are found in such things as fried bacon, smoked meat and rubber products – like latex nipples. Sucking on a pacifier can release small amounts of nitrosamines. – Latex, however, contains far fewer nitrosamines than grilled meat or cosmetic products for example.
MAM supports healthy development for babies: this is why all our raw materials are strictly controlled to ensure they have the lowest possible Nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances value.
At production all teats are ‚leached’. Explained simply, this means that with a special method they are washed for 48 hours. This ‚leaching’ removes the majority of the nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances. At the same time also reducing the risk of a latex allergy.
MAM regularly has cargos of nipples – complete production runs of teats – controlled by an independent laboratory.
Always boil soothers before first use – for additional child safety!

MAM Clip

Are MAM pacifier clips safe for babies?

Yes. MAM designers have developed a clip that meets all safety standards requirements and at the same time also looks stylish.
The length of the band on all MAM pacifier keepers are within regulation and strangulation dangers are virtually impossible. The band should NEVER be lengthened or fastened to lose parts and strings! Check the band for damage before use and always clip on firmly!

Is the MAM pacifier clip for use only with MAM pacifiers?

The clip can also be used for other pacifiers. Although the innovative silicone ring on the MAM clip was designed to snuggly fit the knob on all MAM pacifiers, MAM pacifier keepers can be attached to pacifiers with rings, as well.

How is the MAM pacifier clip cleaned?

Make sure you detach the silicone ring and plastic clip from the pacifier keeper band as they do lose their shape in boiling water and sterilizers. Once these spare parts have been removed, you can throw the band in the wash, or hand wash them. The plastic clip and silicone ring can be hand washed with soap and water.

Is the MAM pacifier clip free from harmful substances?

Yes. Like our entire product line, meets all regulations. The band material complies with all international regulations and meets the OEKO-Tex standards for materials tested for harmful substances as well as the requirements of the German “Bedarfsgegenständeverordnung” for the use of Azo-colourants.
